House of Thembiso is a Place of Safety or Halfway Home for babies up to the age of 12 months. It specifically caters for special needs babies that are HIV positive or have any other physical or mental disability. The babies are cared for until they are healthy enough to be placed with suitable adoptive or foster parents.

Thembiso is a joint venture with Doxa Deo Gemeente in Langeberg Ridge and started in January 2007. It is so named (“Thembiso” means “promise” in Xhosa) because it is our promise to the babies in our care to share Jesus’ love with them in whatever way we can.

To date 6 babies have been cared for. There are many people involved in caring for and loving them. Ria Pelser is the house mother and she has a permanent staff of 5 caregivers. There is also a team of volunteer caregivers who assist with caring for the babies – bathing, feeding, holding and just loving them.

Many other people give freely of their time and special skills – especially in the medical field where doctors, nursing sisters and an occupational therapist all help to ensure that our babies have the best possible medical care. In addition, other volunteers give of their time to help with maintenance of the property.

A committee comprised of members of Doxa Deo and DBC, under the chairmanship of Lofty Nel (pastor of Doxa Deo) and Basil as deputy chairman oversee the running of the home.

You may well be asking yourself right now “How can I help?” Truth be told, there are many areas in which we need help.

First and foremost we need your prayers – especially for the babies, but also for Ria and her team and all others who contribute to the care of the babies. There is a prayer group “Friends of the House of Thembiso” who meet every second Friday at Doxa Deo.

We also really need additional volunteers who are able to give of their time to help take care of the babies. It is our goal to have two volunteer caregivers on duty at all times – but we fall far short of this requirement – especially at weekends.

You may have special skills in the medical, fundraising, marketing, PR, property or vehicle maintenance or repair fields. Your skills may be in a field that may not be immediately obvious as a need for the house – the Lord may have a plan for THAT particular skill.

We also have monthly material needs such as baby goods (Nappies, Baby Formula, Baby lotion and shampoo, Purity) and household cleaning materials. There are set up requirements ranging from baby clothes and linen to built in cupboards. Of course, financial assistance will also be welcome.
